CME Group has officially entered the continuous cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin futures and options now trading 24/7 on its Globex platform, except for a 2-hour maintenance window every Saturday. This change addresses a long-standing inefficiency caused by weekend closures, allowing traders to mitigate risks more effectively. Historically, traders filled gaps created by limited CME trading hours, leading to increased volatility, especially on Sundays. Despite this shift, CME still lags behind in liquidity compared to BlackRock’s IBIT ETF options, which hold significantly more open interest. The transition to 24/7 trading aims to enhance market efficiency and reduce weekend risk premiums.
